If you've noticed more hair coming out lately, the instinct is almost always the same: stop brushing, wash less, touch it as little as possible so you don't "make it worse." I want to gently push back on that instinct, because understanding what's actually happening will help you feel less panicked and more in control.
First, an important distinction: are you seeing breakage, hair snapping mid-strand, or are you seeing full strands, with a little bulb at the end, coming out from the root? Those are two very different conversations, and we'll figure out together which one you're dealing with.
If what you're seeing is coming from the follicle, here's the piece that surprises almost everyone: that hair didn't just decide to fall out today. Hair grows in cycles, and when something disrupts that cycle, a hair doesn't shed immediately. It enters what I like to call the "baby tooth phase." It's still sitting in the follicle, no longer actively growing, technically detached, but not gone yet. A hair can sit in that resting phase for 2 to 3 months before it finally releases. Which means: if you're noticing extra shedding today, the actual disruption happened 8 to 12 weeks ago, not this week, and not because you brushed a little harder yesterday. Avoiding your brush or your shampoo doesn't stop that hair from letting go, since that was already decided weeks ago. It just delays the inevitable, and in the meantime, it robs your scalp of the circulation it actually needs to support the follicles that are still working.
So if it's not something you did this week, what caused it? This is where I want to offer you a different way of thinking about hair loss altogether: it's almost never one single cause. It's usually a reflection of several small things compounding on each other. I think of them as little fires.
Skipped meals, caffeine-only mornings, poor sleep, ongoing stress: none of it happens overnight, but it adds up. Your hair follicles are some of the most metabolically demanding tissue in your body, and when your system is stretched thin, hair growth is one of the first things your body deprioritizes to protect what it needs most.
That's why hair loss is best understood as a reflection of your whole-body system, not a single problem to fix, and why real recovery takes time. We're not just waiting for hair to grow back; we're calming those little fires one at a time, giving your body what it consistently needs, and then waiting out a hair growth cycle that moves at its own pace, regardless of how ready you are to see change.
